Doctorial seminar

The auditorium of Space Academy looked different that morning.
Rows of professors filled slowly, files tucked under arms, murmured conversations floating in the air. Research scholars sat together, whispering nervously. Deans and HODs took their places on the front row, serious faces, pens ready.

At the center table sat the evaluation panel.

And behind them, slightly to the side, sat Professor Kim Taehyung..... Her Advisor,Supervisor, And quietly — her husband. He adjusted his glasses, eyes fixed on the podium, expression calm but heart anything but.

Behind the curtain, Kookie stood holding her presentation remote. Not shaking.
Not panicking.Just breathing.

IU and Lisa stood on either side of her.

IU squeezed her hand lightly,“You’re ready. Just go and own the stage"

Lisa nodded.
"Don't stress.... Just be confident"

Kookie smiled softly.

“Haan… bas thoda darr lag raha hai.”

"Darr kyun?” IU asked.

Poore university ke saamne bolna hai,” she replied, then added quietly,
“aur unke bhi.”

They didn’t need to ask who unke was.

"Toh first time thodi bolegi.... Jb se university mei admission liya hai tbse harr youth fest debate and speech competition mei participate toh krti hai na.... Aur tune toh aise kitne saare presentation diya hai.... Chaho voh class ho chahe seminar hall.... "

"Exactly.... IU is right.... Sirf participate nhi krti sb jeetti bhi hai.... You got various types of awards just for speaking..... You know na.... You're best speaker of our university"

Listening them.... Kookie felt confidence and her fear vanished....
"Yes... I can do this..... "Kookie said with a smile

Both hugged her," all the best kookieaah"

Across the hall, Jimin sat two rows behind the panel, posture straight, hands folded. She wasn’t there as a sister today — she was there as Professor kim Jimin, career counselor of the university. But her eyes kept drifting to the backstage entrance.
She’s grown up so well, Jimin thought.

Beside her sat Jin — dignified, elegant, calm — the President of Space Academy.
But every few seconds, her composed expression softened. That’s my daughter, she thought proudly.

The moderator adjusted the mic.

“Good morning. Today we have the final PhD seminar presentation by research scholar Jeon kookie, from the Department of Sociology.”

A pause.

“Her research topic is—”

‘Changing Pattern of Education System:
From Traditional Classroom to Modern Digital Education and AI –
A Sociological Perspective.’

Soft claps followed.

Kookie stepped onto the stage. Not rushed.
Not hesitant.Confident.She adjusted the mic slightly and looked at the audience.
And then — instinctively — her eyes found Tae.He met her gaze.Just for a second.
No smile.No signal.Just quiet reassurance.
You’ve got this.

“Good morning respected professors, deans, HODs, members of the evaluation committee, and my fellow scholars,” she began.

Her voice was steady.

“This research explores how education, as a social institution, is transforming due to digital platforms and artificial intelligence — and how these changes are impacting access, inequality, pedagogy, and social interaction.”

Slides changed smoothly.

She explained theories effortlessly — functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism — linking each to modern educational shifts.
No memorization, No fear.

“This isn’t just a technological shift,” she said calmly.
“It is a social transformation.”

Some professors nodded.
One HOD leaned forward, interested.
She spoke about rural-urban divides, digital literacy gaps, AI bias, teacher-student relationships, and the changing role of institutions.

And then —

“This research also highlights that digital education should not replace traditional classrooms entirely,” she said, “Instead, it should complement them — ensuring inclusivity rather than deepening inequality.”

Her words were clear, Measured,Mature.

Jimin felt her throat tighten. She leaned back slightly, arms crossed, pretending to be professional — but her eyes shone.
She’s not my baby sister anymore, she thought....She’s a scholar.

Jin clasped her hands gently in her lap.
No clapping.No visible reaction.

But her heart was loud.

Meri gudiya.... she thought.
meri beti.... Kitni badi hogyi.... Watching her proudly

Tae sat perfectly still. But inside —He felt something deep and heavy in his chest.
Not pride but huge Respect. This wasn’t only  his wife standing there but also Dr. Jeon kookie, researcher, thinker, academic.... I didn’t make her, he thought.
She made herself.

The presentation ended.

Applause filled the hall — controlled, professional, but sincere.

One professor adjusted his mic.
“Your research mentions AI reinforcing social bias. How do you suggest institutions address this?”

Kookie nodded.
“By involving sociologists and ethicists in algorithm development,” she replied.
“Education cannot be left solely to technologists.”

A senior dean raised his hand.
Your work critiques AI neutrality. How do you justify that claim?”

Kookie smiled politely.
“Technology is created within society,” she replied,“And society is never neutral. Algorithms inherit the values, priorities, and blind spots of their creators.”

Another professor asked, “What does this mean for future educational policy?”

Kookie didn’t pause.
“It means accountability,” she said.
“Education must not only be modern—but ethical, inclusive, and socially aware.”

Tae folded his hands, Proud,Beyond words.

A dean smiled faintly.

Even Tae asked a question — neutral, academic, distant.
Do you believe hybrid education models are sustainable long-term?”

She looked at him — just another professor.
Yes,” she replied evenly.
“But only if implemented with social responsibility.”

No hesitation.No nervousness.Just confidence.

The Director turned to him.
“Professor Kim Taehyung, as her PhD advisor, your remarks?”

Tae stood.Every eye on him.
“Jeon Kookie’s research demonstrates exceptional analytical depth and sociological sensitivity,” he said calmly.
“She questions systems responsibly and proposes frameworks that are both critical and constructive.”

Their eyes met briefly. A thousand unspoken words passed between them.

After deliberation, the panel returned.

The moderator stood.

“We are pleased to announce that the evaluation committee has unanimously approved the thesis..... Now she can finally submit her final thesis along with its 3 copies to university.... These copies to be signed and submitted to-: Hod, advisor, dean and to the centeral library ofthe university.....” Then he paused," 1 week later on the university convocation day.... She'll be awarded with her doctorate degree....."

Applause erupted. Not loud. But proud.

Jin stood first, clapping with tears openly flowing.Jimin followed, smiling proudly.
IU and Lisa hugged each other tightly.
Kookie bowed slightly. Her eyes shimmered.Tae closed his eyes briefly.
She did it.

Outside the auditorium, people congratulated her.

Professors shook her hand.
Scholars hugged her.
IU and Lisa practically jumped on her.
You did AMAZING,” IU whispered.

"Congrats bhabhi ji...." Bogam said while teasing her

Lisa grinned.
“Dr. Kim kookie, please autograph .”

Jimin walked up, professional tone intact.
Congratulations,” she said formally. Then pulled her into a hug, “I’m so proud of you.”

Jin came last. Then hugged her tightly.
"congratulations mera Bachcha....,” she said softly. "Mumma is so proud of you", while kissing her forehead

Tae watched her from afar. Not as her advisor. Not as a professor. But as a proud husband—Watching his woman he loved become everything she dreamed of.

Later, in a quiet faculty corridor—
Tae gently caught her wrist and pulled her into an empty seminar room. Door closed.

She laughed softly, “Yahan…?”

He cupped her face.
You were extraordinary Mrs kim.”

She whispered, “Sach mein?”

He pressed his forehead to hers.
yes....Dr. Kim Kookie.”

Her breath hitched. He kissed her lips gently making her blush....For a second, their fingers brushed.

“banana milk or strawberry milk?” he asked with a smile.

She nodded, “banana milk.”

Then they finally sat inside the car and went to their home....
